Scientists date it back to about 80 thousand years ago when it happened and that was the moment God was born when our ancestors knew that they were alone and saw how death kept on claiming their kind.
But i also believe that most animals have developed a form of self consciousness to some degree.
But science has no answer as to how this unique trait i call self consciousness invaded humans.
It has remained a mystery to this day.
should we go beyond science and tap into mysticism in order to glean some understanding as to how it happened?
Complete and utter crap – quote your sources.
Which personality are you today?
It is getting difficult to know.

That’s pretty f*cking stupid.
What, you don’t know it right this minute, so… GOD?!?!!?!?
or some other mystic sh*t?

the origin of life and consciousness are big questions but it is highly likely science will eventually find explanations. resorting to anthropocentric mythology to find answers is retrograde

Every so often, someone is born with exceptional mental capacity. Most call them geniuses. My theory is that at some point in that distant past, a genius was born with self awareness and taught others that concept, as well as many other concepts.

One scientific theory is that the formation of the himalayan mountain range changed african climate patterns (that part is fact) and that this change made life in Africa all the more difficult, reducing food, water and other resources. In response only the most intelligent were able to survive and prosper. We lack some of the sensory sensitivity of other animals our real power is our mental capacity, we need to use logic and reasoning to find water rather than a developed sense of smell for instance. Like I said that is only a theory that I read, however it does make logical sense.
What we percieve as consciousness is just a greater degree of intelligence that we are able to define through communication and thus cumulative knowledge.

no. the fact that we are conscious now is clear evidence conscious can exist without us. we stumbled or evolved into it. see fox-p2 gene and its correlation to languge development in humans. Recently a study inserted human fox-p2 into mouse fox-p2 sites and the mice got smarter and communicated better…wow…
look its genetic but our version of consciousness is by no means the definitive and only version of it….perhaps it is born in animals but it isn’t bound to the body but the body creates it or holds it.
I had an accident where i was knocked out for a few days….thrown from a car….and hit my head. I woke up and new everyone in the hospital. I had been out of my body, had memories…pretty much almost dead kind of experience…I also new I was out, in a hospital bed. I know of a few people who have had such experiences but I was seeing nurses down the hall, I could here there conversations….and I spent a lot of time trying to make sense of this…I think the real science of the mind is simply far beyond us…and there is so much we don’t know…you know the light you control in your mind…you see light in your brain right? a stop sign, your favorite shoe, a slice of pizza…but your aren’t seeing what holds this..what shapes it…what can hold billions of photons or more into a intelligent shape that means something to us…to our body? Nothing…we can’t even, by law…know where a both an electron is and its inertia (since mass is constant and p=mv and momentum is related to inertia, you could say we don’t know where an electron is and its velocity at the same time…but something in our mind not only knows where electrons are it constrols them…if all light comes from photons…even the light in the mind….then somthing is controlling the energy levels of billions of cells and hundreds of trillions of trillions of trillions electrons….
defining the problems of consciousness is by no means having any idea what it is…i believe it is part of something that is eternal…complex and never dies…i think you are your mind, for better or worst and that religion is a means to making it very happy…agreeable and the rest beyond the scope of your question.
genetics…see fox-p2 from science or nature…in the past year…a huge article about genetics and the brain…and wow…its cool stuff

"[S]hould we go beyond science and tap into mysticism in order to glean some understanding as to how it happened?" — absolutely not!
The scientific method is the *only* known mechanism for verifying discoveries, precisely because of its stubborn refusal to make stuff up. No amount of wishing it was different will make it so.
Consciousness is inevitable anyway, once you get past a certain amount of brain power.

Self consciousness came to us personally when we step into the period of adulthood where the "mind" came to embrace us to address the conscience of our own personal inner self which some call it "soul". Science has no ability to touch on this issue, so they distant themselves away from it by denying it happened.
Our "life" has this "identical twins" which we call the "desire" and "believe" or "qareen". One may be standing on the devil side and the other may be on the angel side. This split personality come and go, switching around as we live along in the period of our "life span". The choice of using that spiritual attire depend so much on our knowledge which we call "faith" of a belief.
So, it could be a tree, animal, atheist, agnostic or anything. They still have to use that "qareen" to make a stand with some belief system as a basic capacity. They are to obey the rule of our Creator whether they realize it or not. They have to serve the Lord in any ways they choose. Ignorant and Submission is a choice of preference to realm the intuition of an understanding.

The "mystery" is as much the result of disagreement about "consciousness" and self-awareness as it is about anything else. But for the sake of argument, let’s say that self-awareness exists in any living thing which is aware that it is possessed of the trait. An intelligent chimp may be "self-aware," but does not know that it IS self-aware. What allows (or developed concurrently with) this "knowing" is probably the ability to think and communicate symbolically, in which marks (writing) and sounds (words) are sufficiently advanced to allow their enduring storage and transmission at will to others independently of the creature which created them: recorded media.
At some point in our past, the occasional and accidental use of symbols became organized to the extent that matters other than the source of food or a threat or an opportunity of pleasure entered the thinking process and the symbolic expression. It is my conjecture that this was the time when questions such as, "Where did we REALLY come from?" became a subject of discussion. And some will say that this is when man "invented" God. Others may just as convincingly argue that this is when man "discovered" God. But, whether invented or discovered, this would be the time when God (or some big, conscious, independent force) fell into conscious thought.
But bear in mind as well that to early humans (and to this day, among isolated tribes) the notion of consciousness, if not "self-awareness," was assumed to exist among non-human living things, as well. In subsequent scientific development, this quality was ruled out for non-humans. Curiously enough, however, it is back again, so that higher order animals and especially the primates are now believed to have what were once held to be exclusively human traits: emotions, use of tools, specific forms of communication etc. Some will argue that this suggests an evolutionary process which was self-working – no God required. But others will argue that this is the evidence of divine influence in all of nature. And neither will or can "win" the argument.
So, how did it "happen?" What was the trigger event or situation. Hard to say, but what we can know is that it could NOT have happened unless the capacity for it was there in the first place. Some set of events or environmental conditions prompted deployment of the trait. My guess is that brain power and symbolic thinking together with a drive to preserve one’s own life were successful enough to advance the success of the species. In a nutshell, give a world which could feed, comfort and kill you, anything that favored food and comfort and decreased the chances of being killed won the day.
